Zen to Get Sane
~ Gwilda Wiyaka ~
I once asked my old Lakota teacher why he spent so
much time alone in nature, rather than with people – his answer:
“You have to isolate yourself from what is not true,
in order to find that which is.”
He was an amazing medicine man and healer. He told me
that only the true voice of nature can heal a person, by reminding them of who
they are. But first we have to shut up long enough to hear it.
He also described modern society as inside out and
backward, and for the most part, totally crazy.
Not understanding much of what he said at the time, I
have spent the many years since his death contemplating his teachings.
Watching the progression (or should I say regression
of society,) I find I have to agree with him.
Staggering around in our madness, we unconsciously
destroy everything in our path – a delusional race, living in a distorted
reality of our own making.
The only way to see through the illusion is to stand
apart, disengage and align with life itself.
How can we see past the collective delusion? Do the
teachings of ancient traditions hold anything that can help us today? Why are
the old teachings so enigmatic and hard to understand from our modern
perspective? What can they tell us about how life really works?
In order to further explore these mysteries, let’s
triangulate between the modern view point, old teachings from a Lakota medicine
man, and that of a Zen Priest.
