Self-Healing to Overcome Chronic Pain

Self-Healing to Overcome Chronic Pain
~ Gwilda Wiyaka ~

I was alone at my home in the mountains when I fell on the ice and broke my back. Laying on the frozen ground in the shade, at subzero temperatures, was clearly ill advised, yet I was in so much pain I couldn’t move.

I had a spinal fusion when I was younger, and feared I’d reinjured it. Well I remembered the agony of the original injury, and the resulting years of chronic pain. I feared going through that again.

Fortunately, I tend to be rather pragmatic.

“Well, Gwilda, are we going to lie here and mentally create more problems based on past experience, or are we going to do something about the current situation?” I asked myself.

My purse had fallen a short distance away. Of course, it was out of reach, so I took several deep breaths to relax. Being sure to keep my spine straight, I rolled over until I could retrieve the purse and with it, my cell phone.

Twenty minutes later I was in the ambulance, en route to the hospital.

During my healing process, I was in considerable pain. I had to consistently remind myself I was getting better, and that this wasn’t the same as the past injury which continued to worsen until requiring surgery.

As long as I stayed present I could manage the pain, but the minute I went into the past trauma, it would overwhelm me. The experience left me to wonder, how much of our suffering, is suffering over our suffering? How much of our pain results from emotions, mindset and past trauma? Can we actually gain control of those things and overcome chronic pain?

With us this hour to examine the anatomy of pain and our power over it is Dr. David Hanscom, a leading orthopedic spine surgeon at the Swedish Neuroscience Institute in Seattle, WA., and the author of  “BACK IN CONTROL: A Surgeon’s Roadmap Out of Chronic Pain.”  David provides a framework for the patient to find personal solutions, allowing them to live free of pain, forever.
